The Mexican Axolotl is a medium-sized amphibian. The Axolotl is also known as the Mexican Walking Fish, they cannot survive more than a few minutes out of the water though. They are originally found in lakes close to Mexico City such as Lake Xochimilco and are also kept in aquariums as a popular freshwater pet all around the world.

The axolotls scientific name is Ambystoma Mexicanum. They are carnivores and they’re favourite food are worms. They can live up to 20 years. They weigh 60g to about 200g and they can grow from 15cm to 45cm in length. Axolotls are also critically endangered, the main reason is because of the increasing levels of pollution in lakes around Mexico city. (You can find more about axolotls at

I think the axolotl is a cute amphibian. 🙂 I have never heard of axolotls before and they are very interesting. I just don’t know why people in Mexico would want to eat axolotls though…. I also found it interesting how axolotl originates from the Nahiatl words ‘alt’ meaning water and ‘xolotl’ meaning god. Axolotls can also regenerate their limbs if they loose one.
